Netflix vs Suriname

I’ve been using Netflix for a while now and today I’m gonna talk about my experience as a user. What’s the cheapest way to get it and how is the library.

What’s the best way to get Netflix in Suriname ?

So what are prices of a monthly subscription. Well as of now Netflix has recently increased their prices of their monthly subscription. The cheapest is $8.99 with 1 screen and the most expensive one is $17.99, the latter with 4 screens you can watch simultaneously. So for now if you have 3 friends (which are hard to come by nowadays ) you can split the costs and pay $4.50 each. Now with a street currency this would be in the range of SRD 80-90 per month.

Now the prices in Suriname are at the time of this writing $7.99 and $13.99. Much cheaper than in the US… for now. So splitting the costs of getting 4 screens would be $3.50, so around SRD 63-70. So actually you would have to pay at the most SRD 70 to watch Netflix every month… with 3 other friends… and also, one of you would have to be in possession of a credit card. And this would probably be it with tax included. So don’t pay more than SRD 70 if you’re splitting it….. unless they up the prices … which they are planning to do. As of now they are rolling it out on different countries.

Update: the currency rate of the USD went up to 21SRD. So a monthly subscription would be around $13.99 x 21 = 293.79 . Divide that with 4 you’d be somewhere around SRD 73.45 .

What are the alternatives

Now not every one in Suriname has the luxury of having a credit card, even with a low credit of $500. With our increased bad rating of our country, a history of money laundering, banks are very strict who they give credit cards out to. So if you have someone with a credit card be happy if their even willing to use it for you.

But what if no one has a credit card? Well the next best option is to seek out people who “selling” this service. Basically they take on the role of the friend who has the credit card and they have every right to charge you more than they have to. After all.. you’re the one who wants to watch Netflix ( did that come out mean, it’s sounds mean). If you’re willing to pay SRD 100 or SRD 200 per month for Netflix that is totally your decision. Or you can wait till it comes on tv, most of tv stations show torrented movies and series anyway…. Only downside is the advertising and their own timeslot.

On a kind of a plus side this would be handy if you don’t have 3 friends, or even none at all. Sounds harsh but at least you have Netflix 🤷🏽‍♂️

So my advise would be don’t pay more than $5 (American dollars) for Netflix for a single shared screen.

Is Netflix in Suriname different than in the US?

In short yes. Some movies are only available in the US and the same goes for series. The US library has a larger collection and you won’t have access due to region restrictions. Apart from this there’s also the issue of subtitles and audio. Netflix Suriname is seen like a Spanish speaking country, so older series like Breaking Bad have only Spanish subtitles . And if you love Anime, you sometimes only have the choice of original Japanese audio and Spanish and the choice of only Spanish subtitles. Not all of them though, but most of the old ones do.

How to get around region restriction ?

Well if you’d to have access to a larger (US) library and have the option of English subtitles , a VPN is good thing to have. A good VPN would be NORD VPN or Express VPN. I currently use NORD VPN and switching is very easy. I even switch to Brazil to watch a movie that was only released there.

Can I watch Netflix for free?

Well in the past there was a free trial, where all you needed to do was fill in an email address and you had access to Netflix’s library. And lot of people took advantage of this and also of people who weren’t that tech savvy. Yes, all they did was use a free trial and sold it to people who had no idea how to make an account. Which is really a shame sometimes. Most of them can make (multiple) Facebook accounts but they can’t look up simple things online. Access to information doesn’t necessarily mean smarter people it seems. But hey, I guess everyone needs to hustle, especially now during the pandemic.

So thinking about streaming ? Well I’ll leave it up to you. And let me me know what you think. I might’ve gotten a few things wrong, but hey, I’m learning.
